PLANS have been submitted to demolish a tower block in Penzance and build flats.

Housing association LiveWest propose to knockdown the Fountain Court tower block and replace it with 21 affordable apartments.

DMA Architects has put forward a pre-planning application on behalf of the housing association for advice from Cornwall Council’s planning department before lodging a full application.

Thirteen of the apartments would be two-bedroom flats and eight would be one-bedroom.

A spokesperson for DMA Architects said: “The scheme will replace the existing Fountain Court tower block which is now vacant.

“All flats are designed to meet national space standards.

“Externally, the proposal seeks to provide a scheme that utilises local materials found across Penzance but utilised in a contemporary way.

“The scheme will be lower than the existing tower block and will form a street elevation that continues the diversity of colour and architectural etail found along many of the streets of Penzance.

“There are 17 parking spaces as well as a secure external cycle store top the rear.

“Due to the location of the site and itrs very close proximity to the town centre, community facilities, public transport links and existing unallocated parking along St Clares Street we consider that this ratio of parking is sufficient.”
