Plans to demolish a popular family-run pub and hotel in Newquay town centre with a four to seven storey aparthotel have been submitted to Cornwall Council.

Blakesley Estates has applied to demolish the Griffin Hotel in Cliff Road and replace it with a 42-unit aparthotel.

A design statement says the aparthotel units and associated development will be a “high-quality" addition to the existing tourist accommodation stock in Newquay.

"The provision of this purpose-built aparthotel relieves some pressure on the existing housing stock in this area from potential second home owners and is a prime location for holidaymakers to use the aparthotel model."

Apartments would be arranged over four to seven storeys, plus penthouse level, around a central open courtyard, all sat on a basement plinth, with secure off-street car parking for 32 vehicles including space for motorbikes and 42 bicycles, and provision for electric vehicle charging to be installed at each parking space.

The Griffin Hotel is a family-run public house, hotel, B&B, guesthouse with 15 rooms, which caters for weddings, parties and meetings/conferences for up to 50 delegates.
