PLANS for up to another 150 homes on the outskirts of St Austell have been approved despite objections from local people and the town council.
Cornwall Council planners have given the go-ahead to an outline planning application from Kingsley Homes for the housing at Higher Trewhiddle, south of the A390 Truro Road.
Some residents living at the new Wain Homes development adjoining the proposed building site had objected to the scheme.
They said they had bought their homes on the basis that the site would be used for retail development as well as a hotel and a restaurant.
They fear the addition of more housing will be a case of overdevelopment.
The former farmland site sits mostly in the Pentewan Valley parish, though the access to the land comes under the town council’s area.
The town council objected to the housing plan on the grounds of its potential adverse impact on infrastructure, including the services of doctors, dentists and schools. The council was also concerned about the potential impact on air quality.
Kingsley Homes has been given permission for up to 150 homes and for 350sqm of retail and community development. Previously granted permission for the site allowed for up to almost 8,000sqm of retail development.
Planners were told that there had been no viable offers from retail operators regarding the site despite marketing having been undertaken for more than five years.
The site is split into two parcels of land, east and west of the road leading to the Wain Homes development.
Kingsley Homes says that a quarter of the homes built will be affordable.
To the east of the site, nearer the town centre, another housing development is being proposed. This would be for more than 75 homes and would be developed by Treveth at the former Restormel Council offices site off Penwinnick Road.
