SAINSBURY’S has submitted plans for a new store, filling station and up to 60 houses between Falmouth and Penryn.
The hybrid application would see the demolition of the current shop at Ponsharden alongside the remnants of a disused gas works and a former Vosper’s car showroom, which is currently being used as a boat yard.
Full planning permission is sought for the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of a replacement 79,045 sq ft food store and a petrol filling station, parking, access, drainage and associated landscaping and engineering works on land next to the current store.
Sainsbury’s has also applied for outline planning permission for the demolition of the current store buildings to be replaced by a phased development of up to 60 dwellings with car, cycle and pedestrian access, open space, landscaping, drainage, infrastructure and associated engineering works.
The total site area is 12.48 acres (5.05 hectares). Initial plans say that the store would be positioned so that the shopfront faces Falmouth Road and would be visible to customers approaching the site from Ponsharden roundabout to the north. The access road is proposed to be widened to allow vehicles to safely navigate into the car park as well as access the petrol filling station off a filter lane.
The company announced in June that it planned to build a brand new supermarket in Falmouth, which would create up to 100 new jobs.
Sainsbury’s said the store would be more than twice the size of the original, with improved accessibility and sustainability credentials and the retailer’s full range of products. It will also feature an Argos, in the form of a new store-in-store, Tu Clothing and Habitat as well as a new smart charge EV charging hub and three-pump petrol station in the car park.
