LOCAL historian, photograph collector and Voice reader Barrie Doney has no shortage of pictures and stories from Cornwall’s past, which he shares with Voice Newspaper readers every week.

This week’s photograph takes us on a trip to the Great Hall of the Old Duchy Palace.

Barrie says of this photograph: "Commonly known as the Old Duchy Palace, built in the 13th century. The administrative centre for the county. Here was the Stannary Court, Exchequer, Convocation Hall, the Coinage Hall, assay building, smelting houses and Stannary Prison

“The building became the heart of the county, from which all activity was generated. To the left of the photo was the prison. Remains of the Rose Window in the Gable end can still be seen from inside the building. The small building eventually became a butchers shop and latterly extended to a dwelling.”
