NEWQUAY’S mayor has been reinstated to lead the town for the 2025-26 civic year.

Councillor Drew Creek, who represents the Trenance ward at the town council and at Cornwall Council, stated he put himself forward for a second term in charge as there was unfinished business to bring to fruition.

The Green Party representative is keen to oversee the town council finalise the devolution from Cornwall Council of Newquay Youth Centre as well as land at Mount Wise Gardens to create a children’s play park.

He declared there are a lot of projects to achieve, which he stated can only be done with residents, businesses and councillors working together and not allowing party politics to get in the way.

Cllr Creek was reinstalled as the mayor at Newquay Town Council’s meeting on Wednesday, May 14. He told the newly installed town council ahead of councillors serving their four-year term: “Though I was mayor in the last year there were a number of items that we failed to get completed in the year for various reasons.

“I’m really excited to get these finished over the coming year namely the youth centre getting that over the line for Newquay.

“Also, the new play park at Mount Wise, which we have got fully funded and we will break ground on this year as well as other projects as well.

“As the mayor I’m honoured to serve our community here in Newquay. Our corporate plan sets out bold goals but achieving them is going to require all of us.

“Residents, businesses and councillors need to work together regardless of party lines.

“Newquay’s challenges are too important for division. Our priorities as set out in the corporate plan include a greener Newquay, cutting plastics, planting trees, protect our beaches, homes and infrastructure, fighting for affordable housing and better transport.

“Youth and opportunity, which is a real passion of mine, delivering for the youth of Newquay with our new youth hub and upgraded play spaces.

“A thriving high street, which is something that we all want to see backing our local businesses and working with Cornwall Council around business rates.

“Community first is at the heart of everything we do at Newquay Town Council.

“Listening and celebrating our heritage as well as keeping our public spaces clean.

“Progress is not going to happen if we let politics block common sense so I urge every councillor in the chamber to focus on results not rhetoric and to debate ideas and not personalities.

“Put Newquay’s needs above party agendas. Together we will build a town we are all proud to call home and I look forward to working with all the councillors over the new four-year term.”

Councillor Sarah Thomson, who represents the Green Party for the Whipsiderry ward, was elected as the town council’s deputy mayor for the 2025-26 civic year.

Cllr Creek said: “I’m really happy to be able to propose Cllr Sarah Thomson as the deputy mayor.

“She joined the council three years ago and quite quietly squirrelling away on a number of projects over the last three years but has made huge strides forward including working on the youth centre and Priory Woods, which is a woodland that we the town council own on the far side of St Columb Minor.

“Cllr Thomson was wholly responsible for the significant amount of trees that were recently planted on Glamis Road, around Chester Road and Hilgrove Road.

“She has been a really hard and dedicated worker for this town over the last three years.”
