CORNWALL’S rich folkloric culture will be the subject of a one-night celebration at Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery in Truro on Saturday [August 16].
The evening event is a collaboration between Dark Cornwall and Gothe Residency of the Arts (GROTA), and will explore folklore through art, storytelling and immersive experiences.
This takeover event will include guided encounters, specialist speakers, storytelling and a specially curated art exhibition featuring over 80 works from international artists representing nearly 30 distinct cultures and regions.
“Cornwall is home to a wealth of incredible folklore, which intertwines with our storytelling traditions and the plethora of archaeological sites dotted across the landscape,” said museum collections manager Jeni Woolcock. “Every day, visitors to the museum can explore the myths and legends that run through the region and learn something new about this wild place on the edge.”
Dark Cornwall is dedicated to preserving Cornish folklore, myths and ancient sites through storytelling, art, and interactive tools, we celebrate Cornwall’s rich heritage and support local artists. Founder Rob Vickery said: “We will shine a light on Cornish artists and those from the around the world dedicated to celebrating and preserving their local heritage and folklore.”
Gothe Residency of the Arts (GROTA) is a private artist residency based in Scotland, founded and hosted by Vincent Gothe, who said: “At a time when human creativity is increasingly overshadowed by machine-generated content, this exhibition exists to reaffirm the irreplaceable value of the lived experience, perspective, and imagination that each and every artist brings to the stories they preserve.”
The exhibition will focus on four themes: culture, history, folklore and art. It includes several local works from students at Falmouth University and promises to inspire and engaging new audiences with folktales from around the world.
