The Christmas season is now in full swing, and as your mayor, it has been an absolute pleasure to attend so many wonderful community engagements.

A particular highlight was an afternoon of glorious Christmas songs performed by the Afternoon Choirs of Newquay, Bodmin, and Falmouth, accompanied by the amazing children from Bishops School. The sound of all those smiling, singing voices filling St Michael’s was a true delight. I was also honoured to open the spectacular Newquay Junior Academy Christmas Fair, brilliant festive extravaganza made by the children themselves.

After those events and our recent light switch on I am full of festive cheer, I hope you all are too. Although I was away for my birthday weekend and could not attend in person, I fully support the powerful message of last week’s Reclaim the Night vigil. It was a vital community statement on protecting women and girls, and a reminder that safety and respect for all must remain at the heart of our town. This commitment aligns with the positive news from Inspector Steve Johnson at our full council meeting.

He reported that Newquay currently enjoys the lowest crime levels in Cornwall. As the largest population in the Duchy, this makes us officially the safest place to live, a fantastic achievement. This is a testament to our local police and all partners in the Newquay Safe initiative. However, we will not be complacent. Even with low figures, we must, and indeed we will, continue to strive to make our community safer and more supportive for everyone. In this season of goodwill, it is heartening to see our community spirit shine, from our festive events to our shared commitment to safety and respect for all. Wishing you a peaceful and happy festive period.

Phil Trebilcock’s Harbour View

Another changeable week of weather. One low pressure after another in the Atlantic. There is big demand now for shellfish, especially lobsters, but boats can’t get out and there is too much swell. A sad end to the red boat in the harbour by the looks of it. I think she will be broken up and taken away this week or next week.

This Saturday Elvis is playing at the Rowing Club at 9pm. All Welcome.

Thought for the week: “Face your fears, watch your strength grow.”
