This weekend, my wife and I were honoured to be invited to Newquay Hockey Club’s 60th Anniversary Celebration at the Sandy Lodge Hotel. It was a brilliant evening, filled with fantastic stories from the founding members who first established the club back in 1965.
Hearing their tales of triumphs and challenges was a powerful reminder of the resilience at the heart of grassroots sport. This club is woven into the very fabric of our town’s identity and community. That’s why, as we face a time when the club is forced to train in Truro due to a lack of local facilities, it is clear to me this situation must be rectified. I am committed to working with the team and other stakeholders to bring hockey training and matches back home to Newquay.
On another celebratory note, I must extend my huge congratulations to the incredible team at Newquay in Bloom. Last week, they secured a ‘Gold’ award for our town – for an astonishing 17th year in a row! The awards event in Torquay was a wonderful celebration of community and horticultural achievement. It was a privilege to accept the awards on behalf of our town alongside the Bloom team’s Chair, Lesley Friel, who continues to do an amazing job.
Both these groups exemplify the dedication and pride that make Newquay so special.
Phil Trebilcock’s Harbour View
Another fine week of weather with light easterly winds and dry into the weekend.
It is very quiet around the harbour now, maybe one last rush with half term coming up. This Saturday is the last gig race, the Silver Welly at 3 pm. Commercial fishing is quiet inshore. A few red mullet are being caught. Not many bass are around.
This Saturday Small Wonder are playing at the Rowing Club at 9pm.
