Last Wednesday, our Big Tree Planting day in Trenance Valley exceeded all expectations. It was an absolute joy to see well over 100 members of our fantastic Newquay community come together to help us plant 500 trees, including a beautiful new orchard of fruit trees.
The atmosphere on the day was electric with excitement. For me, the most poignant moment was seeing so many young children eagerly getting involved, happily getting their hands dirty to plant a tree.
As both the Cornwall Councillor for Trenance and your Mayor, this is a project I have championed for some time. Following the awful loss of trees we sadly witnessed earlier this year, this wonderful community effort goes some way to starting to redress that balance.
Standing there watching the children, mostly under 12, carefully placing their saplings into the ground, I was struck by a rather romantic thought.
I imagined them in years to come, perhaps walking hand-in-hand with their own families through the very forest and orchard they planted as children. It was a beautiful reminder that we are not just planting trees for today, but for generations to come.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came along and made it happen. It is a reminder to me that investment in our young people here in Newquay will pay us dividends for generations to come and that is what this Town Council is very much focused on. A huge thank you to Forests for Cornwall team who organised the day.

Yet another unsettled week of weather ahead with fresh south westerly winds until Friday, then gales again.
The whole Rowing Club were saddened to hear Pam Mountford had passed away. She was an excellent rower in early days and in later years a good dancer.
The funeral is this Saturday at 12pm at St Michaels Church. The gig Newquay will carry the coffin down the harbour at 11am.
Prevention will be performing at Newquay Rowing Club on Saturday at 9pm.
Thought for the week “Love is blind, but the neighbours aren’t.“
