Marazion’s annual ecumenical beach service was held on Sunday.

The service was led by the Reverend Sophie Troczynska, curate at Mounts Bay United Benefice, and the Reverend Rebecca Fugill of the Lizard & Mounts Bay Circuit.

The service raised funds for the Wave Project, a Cornish charity which uses surf therapy to support young people’s mental health and wellbeing. The theme of the service was the story of Jonah and the whale – and the organisers even made up their tent on the beach to look like a whale!

“We were talking about when we go into the depths and darknesses of life and want to run away – but God’s presence is always there with us even in those darkest depths,” Revd Sophie explains.

The service was accompanied by the Penzance Silver Band, who played the music for the hymns. Fortunately, the event was blessed with good weather.

“We’d had some bad weather a day or two before, but on the day it was really lovely. We felt the joy of coming together as the community of Marazion to celebrate God’s creation and our time together,” Sophie says.
