A martial arts seminar has been held to demonstrate how the discipline can improve mental health.
Atlantic Karate Newquay staged ‘Karate for Mental Health - South West’ at the St Columb Minor Academy.
The Karate for Mental Health movement was set up as a means to bring martial artists together and raise money for local mental health charities, bringing in instructors from the South West and further away in the UK.
The instructors give their time up on the day to help like-minded martial artists the opportunity to train, learn and enjoy their karate and albeit at the same time raising money for two worthy local mental health charities.
The event brought together Kevin Cooke from Cornwall Karate, Penzance, Clare Potter from Sakura Martial Arts, Newton Abbot, Lee Phillips of Atlantic Karate, Newquay, Dave Shaw from Sheffield Karate and 8th dan John Johnston from Adaptive Karate, Derby who all gave their time for free to make the event such a resounding success.

Attendees had the unique opportunity to learn from renowned instructors in their separate styles of karate with an emphasis on both traditional martial arts values and modern training approaches, the seminar aimed to empower participants to develop their skills and enhance their overall well-being.
Participants were immersed in a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere throughout the day, characterised by a spirit of camaraderie, respect, and mutual growth.
“We are thrilled with the overwhelming success of this martial arts seminar,” said Lee Phillips of Atlantic Karate, Newquay. “Our goal was to create an enriching and inclusive environment where participants could expand their knowledge, refine their techniques, and forge meaningful connections with fellow martial artists from all over the South West. We witnessed the power of unity and the transformative impact of martial arts in fostering personal growth and empowerment and at the same time bringing awareness and funds for the chosen local charities.”
The two charities that were chosen to benefit were The Wave Project in Newquay and Man Down Cornwall.
Lee, the chief Instructor at Atlantic Karate, added: “We are honoured to have chosen Man Down Cornwall and The Wave Project as the beneficiaries of our seminar and join their mission of supporting so many individuals mental health.
“By combining the power of martial arts with the healing benefits of surfing, we we hop this can create a positive ripple effect within our community, promoting physical and mental well-being for young individuals who need it most and with our other beneficiaries Man Down Cornwall we can help them to create a positive impact and encourage men to prioritise their well-being, seek support when needed, and foster a community where they can thrive.”
