THE Huer’s hut was bathed in purple light on Thursday as part of a worldwide awareness campaign.

The historic building was lit up to help put a spotlight on World Pancreatic Cancer Day.

Archie Dixon, aged 11, and Leo Merrikin, aged eight, who have both lost their grandads to pancreatic cancer, Terry Dixon, aged 65, and Chris Phillips, aged 60, turned the lights on at 5.30pm. The pair were joined by family and friends.

Terry Dixon, who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2022, organised for the Huers Hut to be lit up purple for the first time in November 2023. His wife Zoe asked friends and family to make donations at his funeral instead of sending flowers to enable the purple lights campaign to continue in future years.

Working with Newquay Lions and Newquay Town Council the donations were used to purchase lighting so that the Huers Hut can be lit up every year in Terry’s memory. In addition, the purchase of lighting means that these lights can be used to light the building in different colours for other purposes, subject to necessary permissions.

Mrs Dixon said: “Eighty per cent of people are not diagnosed until the cancer has spread and nearly half of those diagnosed die within three months.”
