A Newquay family business with roots stretching back generations is redefining how homes are built in the county - proving that sustainable, locally made housing can still be affordable.

Luxon, a 115-year-old developer, is combining modern construction innovation with community values, and has just been boosted with support from Allica Bank.

The Luxons have been building family homes across Cornwall since 1910, and Jon-Claude Luxon, descendant of founder Alfred Luxon, is now spearheading their latest Trevemper development in Newquay, which is a collection of energy-efficient family homes setting a new benchmark for sustainable living in the region.

Constructed using insulated concrete form, made from 93 per cent recycled plastic the homes stay warmer for longer while reducing energy use. The development has already earned an international property award for sustainability and marks the first phase of Luxon’s wider plan to bring eco-conscious family homes to communities across Cornwall.

Luxon’s goal is simple but ambitious: to build high-quality, fossil-fuel-free homes that will last for generations at prices comparable to traditional builds. True to its Cornish roots, more than 90 per cent of the suppliers and tradespeople involved in the new Trevemper site are based within just 10 miles. Even the stone used on-site is locally recycled, with 95 per cent repurposed through Cornish recycler, RIG UK.

Managing director Jon-Claude Luxon said: “Building sustainably isn’t just a business decision, it’s a personal one.

“We still live here, our families live here, and we want to be proud of what we’re creating. It’s about what’s right for the planet and what’s right for the future home owner.”

Luxon’s legacy in the area runs deep. A local couple first bought a home from Jon-Claude’s grandfather in the 1980s, and, almost four decades later, returned to purchase a new Luxon home in 2018. Their family has now grown, and the couple were drawn back by the trust and quality that has carried through generations.

Mr Luxion said: “That kind of loyalty means the world to us. “It shows that people trust what we build, not just for the short term, but for life.”

Support from Allica Bank has been key to Luxon’s growth, helping the business invest in greener technologies that often come at a higher cost than traditional materials.
