THE final designs for the Camborne Renew transport scheme are now complete, with construction currently expected to begin in early October.

The aim of the Renew scheme, part of the wider Camborne Town Deal Transport Project, is to enhance the appearance of Camborne town centre, improve access for pedestrians and cyclists, and increase the amount of time people spend in the town and support the local economy.

The original plans were amended following concerns over some elements of the design from residents and businesses. The revised plans focus on improving the environmental aspect of the town centre by:

  • Adding new seating and plant greenery
  • Improving pedestrian crossings throughout Trelowarren Street
  • A new zebra crossing at Fore Street
  • Extending on-street free parking at the top of Trelowarren Street from 30 minutes to an hour
  • Repairing paving defects in Commercial Square
  • Installing enhanced lighting and CCTV
  • Providing secure cycle parking

All traffic flow proposals were removed from the scheme following previous consultation in spring 2023.

While the scheme is predominantly focused on Trelowarren Street and Commercial Square, there are also proposals to enhance the character of adjoining streets to complement the overall project.

The project team are working closely with Camborne town council, Camborne BID and other partners

Following a positive response to the revised plans during the statutory consultation carried out earlier this year, and subsequent discussions with the town council and other stakeholders over the materials and design of the street furniture and other elements of the scheme, the project is now in a position to proceed to the construction phase.

With construction taking place within the centre of the town, the project team are working closely with the town council, Camborne BID and other partners to develop co-ordinated plans to ensure that Camborne remains open for business and that residents and visitors can continue to access the places they want to go.

A community drop-in session will be held at Create CIC (Donald Thomas Centre on Chapel Street) between 10am and 6.30pm on September 3 to enable local residents and businesses to find out more about the final designs and traffic management arrangements during the construction period.

Information will also be published on the project page on the Let’s Talk Cornwall site at letstalk.cornwall.gov.uk/camborne-renew and on the Camborne Town Deal website at cambornetowndeal.com/

The Camborne Renew and Camborne LifeCycle schemes are part of the Camborne Town Deal Transport Project, one of 10 Town Deal funded projects which are aimed at regenerating the heart of Camborne.

Significant progress has been made on delivering the Lifecycle scheme which, when complete, will provide 3.7km of enhanced walking and cycling routes with the aim of connecting key sites and encouraging pedestrians and cycle usage, cutting down on car journeys and improving air quality in and around the town centre.

The scheme covers eight separate locations with a variety of measures to enhance walking and cycling provision from the town centre, along the former Roskear tramway with connections to Park Gerry and the Red River Trail.

Work is now complete on the north section of the tramway, between North Roskear Road and Boilerworks Road. This section is unrecognisable from before works commenced, when it was overgrown and completely impassable. The Boilerworks Road end of the path will be integrated into the future works to take place at the Treverno Road / Boilerworks Road junction which is planned to start in September.

Good progress is being made on the south section of the tramway, between North Roskear Road and Roskear Road (past the cricket club). Repairs to the wall are now complete and whilst construction of the new footway along with drainage and streetlights is ongoing, the whole route is planned to be open in September.

Works are also complete on the new signalised crossing at Roskear, near the roundabout outside Tesco. The crossing is already seeing plenty of use, providing a safer place to cross this busy road.

Construction is ongoing at the Albert St / North Parade / Park Road / Roskear Road junction, having started in mid-June. The improvement for pedestrian accessibility is already becoming clear to see, with crossing distances greatly reduced from the previous layout. This scheme is planned to be completed by the end of August.

The overall programme remains on schedule, with the second portion of works to be delivered by early 2026.
