Prime Cattle

No shortage of quality this week, with all cattle selling on a storming trade and the very best of the entry trading north of the £4.00 per kilo mark again.

Top honours to a classy 577kg Limousin heifer from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at 405p/kg (£2,337), followed by a second good 647kg Limousin heifer from the same farm at 400p/kg (£2,588).

Topping the steers was a good 641kg Blue from McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, Newquay at 398p/kg (£2,551) and Mr R I Nicholls from St Clement, Truro then marketed his pair of Angus steers at 382p/kg (£2,590) and 375p/kg (£2,261).

Next in the heifers was an OTM 557kg Limousin from Mr Julian at 375p/kg and another 648kg Limousin heifer then traded at 370p/kg (£2,398).

Cull Cows

A light and mixed summer entry in the Cull Ring to report. Top beef type to respectable 315p/kg (£2,123) for a 674kg Blonde cow from Messrs P Kingdon & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay and a 641kg Limousin cow from Mr R I P Andrew of Coverack, Helston realised 302p/kg.

A good weighty 772kg Hereford cow from Messrs W Pascoe & Son of Wendron, Helston went under the hammer for 286p/kg (£2,208) and a Devon cow from Mr D J Beckerleg of St Austell sold away at 262p/kg.

Dairy types topped at 237p/kg for a Friesian cow from Messrs D C & W A Thomas of Tresillian, Truro, with further Friesians from the same farm at 219p/kg, 210p/kg and 204p/kg.

A pair of cull bulls entered this week being a 784kg Limousin from Mr P C W Moyle of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth at 249p/kg and an 896kg Hereford from Miss O Edson of Pendeen, Penzance at 242p/kg (£2,168).

Store Cattle

A larger entry this week of 180 head topping at £2,240 for a pair of 16-month-old South Devon steers on behalf of Mrs E R Clemens of St Ervan, Wadebridge, followed by superb 21-month-old steers from McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, Newquay with a choice pair of Blues at £2165, Angus at £1900, and further Blues to £1895.

A single 22-month-old Limousin steer from Mr R D White of Truro achieved £1955, with a further slightly younger steer from the same vendor at £1760.

A trio of 22-month-old Limousins from R M Farming Co of Sticker, St Austell, realised £1890, whilst a 29-month-old Angus from Messrs H K & S M Pascoe of St Keverne, Helston realised £1585.

Younger steers topping at £1525 on behalf of Mr C L Thomas of Sithney, Penzance as his choice four 12-month-old Limousins went under the hammer, followed by a 10-month-old Hereford from Mr M Allen of Roche, St Austell at £1550 and a slightly younger pair from Mr Allen at £1495.

Further Herefords from Mr Allen to £1405, followed by further Limousins from Mr C L Thomas at £1380.

Heifers topping at £1860 on behalf of McCardell & Thompson Ltd, with the same vendor going on to sell five 20-month-old Blues to £1855 and followed by Messrs T A & A M Wills of St Erme, Truro at £1775 for a 25-month-old trio of Limousins.

Messrs V C & F Hosking of St Martin, Helston sold four Herefords to £1645 whilst a 23-month-old Angus from Messrs C & V Ellis & Son of St Erth, Hayle achieved £1445.

Younger heifers to £1285 on behalf of Mr W L Rowell of St Keyne, Liskeard followed by a 9-month-old Limousin from Mr M H Burt of The Isles of Scilly at £1275, whilst Mr M Allen sold a trio of 10-month-old Hereford heifers to £1210.

Further 1-year-old Limousins to £1185 and £1170 on behalf of Mr C L Thomas, whilst Mr W L Rowell sold a 10-month-old South Devon to £1180.

A large consignment of 5-month-old stores from Gwealavellan Partners of Gwithian saw a fast trade and topped at £990 for steers and £940 for heifers with 40 more booked for next week.

Rearing Calves

A good number of calves forward this week, with a ring full of buyers in attendance the trade would be very strong throughout.

The bull calves sold to £685 for a Limousin x sold by Messrs W Marsh & Son from St Stephen, St Austell who sold further Limousin x bulls at £605, £580 and £550 and going on to sell a Limousin x heifer for £465.

Messrs G J D Champion & Son from Praze sold their best British Blue x bull for £630 and their British Blue x heifer making £455.

Messrs W J A & S J Hain from Four Lanes sold British Blue x bulls for £605 and £600, and going on to top the heifer section with British Blue x heifers to £550 and further heifer at £545 twice and £535 twice.

Messrs A D & J A Bray from St Martin sold their British Blue x bulls for £585 and £505, with further very young British Blue x bulls to £500 for Messrs R M & C D Rundle from Mevagissey who also sold Hereford x bulls at £475 and £455.

The top price for Hereford x bulls was £495 on behalf of Mr W R Davey from Probus and the top Aberdeen Angus x bull to £510 for Messrs R J, K M, A M & S E Worden from Gunwalloe and plenty of other vendors marketing calves between £460 to £500.

Further heifer calves saw a British Blue x heifer sell for £460 for Messrs C J & J E Colwell from Creed who also sold an Aberdeen Angus x heifer for £410, and very young Limousin x heifers to £430 for Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah, Truro.

Prime Lambs

A flying trade with strong demand across the board.

The fleshy heavy weights continue to command top money, seeing a 55kg Suffolk x mule butchers’ lamb top at £197, sold to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

A tremendous run of Texel lambs forward from the Backway family of St Eval, Wadebridge with a pair of 45kg lambs setting the premium at 387p/kg sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Cull Ewes

Another increased entry and a cracking stand-on trade flying away to £228 for the best pair of Texels from Messrs I D & S S Backway of St Eval, Wadebridge followed by £220 for their next.

Further Texels to £210 for Messrs P T R & P E Jones & Son of Crantock, Newquay; £207 for Miss S Trewern of Praze, Camborne; £203 for Mrs A Shazell of St Columb; £182 again for Miss Trewern; and £176 again for Messrs Jones. Poll Dorset to £181 for a big single from Messrs Ansell Brothers of Penzance.

Zwartbles to £176 for Mrs F Vincent of Camborne. Suffolk to £153 for Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road. Bager Face to £152 for Mr W G Bray of Mullion.

Several runs of composite ewes, the best for Mr R Wootton of Zelah, Truro with pens to £170, £160, £150 twice & £146.

Just a few rams forward, selling to £160 for a Poll Dorset from Mr W G Bray. 2T (sheep) to £157 for a single from Mr A Trethewey of Hewaswater.

Store Sheep

The largest entry of store lambs so far this year selling on a buoyant trade with all types keenly contested.

The top price of £140 achieved by both Messrs K S & L Dodd of Old Kea, Truro and Mr J F Rowe of Menabilly, Par with a further pen from Mr J F Rowe selling to £138.50.

A big run in from Maxco Farms of St Allen, Truro sold to £137.50, £135.50, £128 and £118.50 with many more thereafter, whilst eight smart lambs from Mr K Shoesmith of Redruth achieved £130.50.

No shortage of lambs trading between £110 and £130 and all 175 lambs consigned selling in excess of £90 with an overall average of £115.
