Prime Cattle
A sensational entry of Prime Cattle forward this week, with a fast trade seen for all on offer to start the new month well.
Top honours to a beauty of a 665kg Limousin heifer from Mr M A Grigg of Lower Sticker, St Austell at 400p/kg (£2,664), with a pair of quality Limousins from the same stable topping the steers at 395p/kg (£2,978 & £2,891).
A young 590kg Simmental steer from Mr M D Rogers of St Hilary, Penzance realised 384p/kg (£2,266), followed by a 600kg Limousin heifer from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro at 381p/kg (£2,286).
Another quality 804kg Limousin steer from Mr Grigg went under the hammer at 378p/kg and the resultant top pounds-per-head of the day at a massive £3,039.
Mr Rogers saw his next 625kg Simmental steer trade at 377p/kg (£2,356) and a final 784kg Limousin steer rounded off Mr Grigg’s successful day at 375p/kg (£2,940).
Cull Cows
A quieter entry in the Cull section to report, with very few beef types forward, although a brisk trade witnessed.
Top price beef type awarded to a 755kg South Devon cow from Mr R Sadler of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth at 293p/kg (£2,212).
Dairy types to 246p/kg for a Jersey cow from Messrs M J & R M Tremayne of Constantine, Falmouth, followed by a good Friesian cow from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston at 244p/kg and their other same-breed cow at 236p/kg thereafter.
A pair of Cull Bulls forward topped at 252p/kg for a 978kg South Devon from Mr E P Bowden of Connor Downs, Hayle at a resultant £2,465.
Store Cattle
A good entry forward though fewer close to finish types as reflected in the top prices.
Nevertheless, a top price for steers of £2405 for a superb pair of 29-month-old South Devons on behalf of Messrs P & M R Biddick of St Columb, with Messrs Biddick going on to sell a further South Devon to £2300 and 2-year-old Limousins to £2300 and £2260.
Mr A L Pascoe of Fraddam, Hayle sold a fine 17-month-old Limousin to £2330, whilst a grand bunch of 4 Angus of the same age from Mr J C Ball of St Merryn, Padstow parted away at £2030.
Super 16-month-old Limousins from Mr F Stephens of Lostwithiel sold to £1920, whilst a pair of 15-month-old South Devons from Mr E P Bowden of Connor Dows, Hayle achieved £1680.
Six 1 and a half year old Angus steers from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb looked well sold at £1460, whilst younger cattle from Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Par, St Austell and Messrs B K and E L Piper of Sithney, Helston realised £1125 and £1070 respectively.
Heifers topping at £1835 on behalf of Mr E P Bowden, followed by a pair of 21-month-old Anguses from Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell at £1695.
21-month-old British Blues at £1615 on behalf of Mr R T Dunn, whilst Mr J C Ball sold 17-month-old Angus heifers to £1650 and £1360.
Mr J McFadden of St Just, Penzance sold four 1 and a half year old Devon heifers to £1270, whilst the 1-year-old heifers topped at £1330 for pair of South Devons on behalf of Mr E P Bowden, followed by Messrs M G and T A Tuckett for their pair of 14-month-old Herefords at £1070.
Rearing Calves
Another good entry of calves with the best quality calves continuing to sell on strong trade and the second quality or very young calves a little more selective.
Best of the bull calves flew away to £725 twice for a superb pair of Limousin x bulls sold by Messrs S J A & L S M Tripconey of St. Keverne, Helston.
Best of the British Blue x bulls to £565 for Messrs W J A & S J Hain from Four Lanes, Redruth who also went on to top the heifer section with their best British Blue x heifer making £565 and selling further British Blue x heifers at £515 & £435 twice.
Further British Blue x bulls to £530 twice for two vendors being Messrs W Marsh & Son from St. Stephen, St Austell and also for Messrs R M & C D Rundle from Mevagissey, St Austell who sold a further British Blue x bull for £495 and going on to sell a run of very young Hereford x calves with bulls and £470 and £455 with heifers to £410.
Messrs C J & J E Colwell of Creed, Grampound sold their best British Blue x bull at £495, and Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah, Truro saw their British Blue x bulls to £455, plenty of other vendors marketing bulls between £350 to £400 further heifers saw a Limousin x make £350 on behalf of Messrs A D & J A Bray from St. Martin, Helston and many other heifers marketed between £260 to £310.
Prime Lambs
The finished trade continues to rally and the butchers’ lambs are in high demand, seeing prices reach £199 for a pair of 58kg lambs from Mr A Weston of Pemboa, Helston sold to Stillmans of Taunton.
Setting the premium at 386p/kg for a choice butchers’ Texel weighing 49.50kg from Mr J D Couch of Couchs Mill, Lostwithiel, purchased by J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
Prime Hoggs
Only two hoggs in the market this week, those being a pair of 69.5kg heavies from Mr J McFadden of St Just, Penzance looking well sold at £149 (214p/kg) and purchased by J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
Cull Ewes
Decent number forward for the time of year, but continentals and first quality ewes in very short supply this week, coupled with a very high proportion of smaller bodied plainer ewes and hill bred types.
As a consequence, the trade has eased slightly this week in line with the regional and national trends.
Suffolks were out in front with a trio from Mr J McFadden of St Just, Penzance topping the market at £186, and a pair of Texel types from the same vendor at £185.50. One other Texel forward from Mr B Lugg of Cury Cross Lanes, Helston at £179.
Further Suffolks to £177 for a pen from Messrs W E & A Pearce of Troon, Camborne; £139 from Mr S G Parkin of Whitemoor, St Austell; and £129 again from Mr Lugg. Charollais to £154 for a medium ewe from Mr D Couch of Couchs Mill, Lostwithiel.
Dorset to £148.50 for Mr T M Michell of Truro. Lleyn to £144 for Messrs D W & Y Swinfen of Mylor, Falmouth.
Suffolk X mules to £136 again from Messrs Swinfen and also from Mr W D Pascoe of St Newlyn East, Newquay.
Cull rams to £136 and £130 for Dorsets again from Mr Lugg, and £128 for Dorsets from Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Par, St Austell.
Sheep (2T) to £163 for Mr B Tomkins of Wendron, Helston and £144 again for Mr Pascoe.
Store Sheep
120 lambs entered this week with many being forward, close to finish continental types and a tremendous trade seen from start to finish.
A cracking pen from Miss S Matthews of Gulval, Penzance topped the section at £148, followed by strong trio from Sturmans Livestock of Burlawn, Wadebridge at £144.50.
Heavies from Mrs P R Sluggett of Grampound Road, Truro sold to £139.50, whilst 2 sharp pens from Mr S G Parkin of Whitemoor, St Austell were close behind, both realising £139.
All bar a few longer term stores selling in excess of £100, and the vast majority realising between £120 and £135.
