Prime Cattle

Another 30 cracking Prime Cattle forward this week selling on an equally strong trade for the best of the entry, despite the recent easing of the deadweight prices.

Top of the day to 393p/kg (£2,629) for a quality 669kg Limousin heifer from Mr M A Grigg of Lower Sticker, St Austell, with other topping heifers from the same vendor at 386p/kg (£2,536) and 381p/kg (£2,469), with his steers selling away at 385p/kg (£2,764), 375p/kg (£2,828) and 366p/kg (£2,686).

Further good steers selling at 371p/kg (£2,430) for a 655kg Blue from Messrs A A & D P Eddy of St Erth, Hayle, 370p/kg (£2,720) for a 735kg non-FABBL Angus from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne and a pair of Simmental steers from Mr M D Rogers of St Hilary, Penzance traded at 365p/kg (£2,256) and 360p/kg.

A good South Devon heifer from Laity Farms of Gwinear, Hayle went under the hammer for 366p/kg and a young 668kg Angus heifer from the same stable at 346p/kg (£2,311) thereafter.

Cull Cows

Numbers similar to last week in the Cull section, with top honours away to a good Shorthorn cow from Mr A J Jelbert of Mitchell, Newquay at 288p/kg.

A Blue cow from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston sold at 280p/kg and a Limousin cow from Pelistry Farm of The Isles of Scilly realised 278p/kg.

Dairy types to 266p/kg for a Norwegian Red from Messrs M J & R M Tremayne of Constantine, Falmouth, followed by a trio of Friesian cows from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro with their best prices at 232p/kg and 225p/kg.

Store Cattle

A light entry selling on a firm trade topping at £2160 for a top-quality trio of 23-month-old Blue heifers on behalf of Mr A Blamey of Veryan, Truro, with a Limousin heifer from the same farm achieving £2100.

Sticking with the heifers, Mr T Blackshire of London Apprentice, St Austell sold a fine 25-month-old blue to £1900 followed by 1½ year old Blues from Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell at £1740, £1480 and £1450.

Messrs D R & J C Vincent & Son of Tregavethan, Truro sold a cracking pair of 16-month-old South Devons to £1295, with younger heifers topping at £1120 for a pair of 1 year old Shorthorns on behalf of Mr A J Jelbert of Mitchell, Newquay.

Mr R J Osborne of Fraddon sold a pair of 1 year old Herefords to £1105, whilst Mr P A Henwood of St Issey, Wadebridge sold 1 year old Limousins to £1045.

Steers topping at £1780 for 16 month old Charolais from Mr K R Williams of Camborne, followed by quality 1 ½ year old Herefords from Mr K Bottrell at £1645, £1600 & £1570. One year old steers to £1550 on behalf of Mr A J Jelbert, followed by a single Limousin from Mr P A Henwood at £1235.

A smart 9 month old Limousin from Pelistry Farm, Isles of Scilly sold at £1200, whilst a pair of 10-month-old Angus from Messrs J H Pengelly & Son of Paul, Penzance realised £1150.

Strong Limousin and Shorthorn cows and calves from Mr A J Jelbert selling to £2800 and £2780 on a fast trade. 7 more entered for next week.

Rearing Calves

A good entry of calves seeing 76 passing through the ring, all selling on a similar good trade to recent weeks.

Best of the bull calves to £600 for a smart young British Blue x bull sold by Messrs R J, K M, A M & S E Worden from Gunwalloe, Helston, who sold another British Blue x bull for £400 and their British Blue x heifer making £330.

Messrs W Marsh & Son from St Stephen, St Austell sold a Limousin x bull for £550 with another making £530 and going on to top the heifer section at £455 with their Limousin x heifer and others at £325 and £305.

Messrs C J & P H George from Tresillian, Truro had their usual run of quality young calves on offer seeing the best of their British Blue x bulls to £510 with others at £495, £465 and £425 and their British Blue x heifers making £340 and £325.

Messrs A G Cave & Son from Rame sold a run of Aberdeen Angus x calves with the best bull making £500 and further bulls at £480, £475, £465 and £445. Messrs Searle & Son from Penzance sold their best Aberdeen Angus x bull for £430 with their Aberdeen Angus x heifers to £320.

A run of older 3-4 month old Aberdeen Angus x weaned calves out of Jersey x cows looked well sold with a bunch of three steers making £460 each and a pen of four heifers selling for £360 each sold by Messrs R D & R V Cookson from Nine Maidens.

Prime Lambs

Following the trends throughout the country this week, the finished trade is more difficult.

A smart run of heavies from Mr D J Tremain of St Columb saw their 56.8kg lambs top the market at £169, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

A trio of meaty 41kg Blue Texel x lambs from Mrs B Baxter of Wendron set the premium at 240kg, purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

A stronger entry this week resulting in an overall section average of £119.50 which is a credit to vendors.

Topping the section was a 2023 born ram from Mrs B Baxter of Porkellis, Helston selling at £225.00. Heading up the ewes was a strong Aberfield from Mr R Gluyas of Stithains, showing more like a Texel, and selling for £186.00 with the rest of the run at £140.00.

Texel and Texel x ewes to £170.00 for Mr A Kemp of Truro; £165.00 for Messrs J Lenthall & Son of St Columb; £159.00 for Mr E M J Eggins of St Breock, Wadebridge; £158.50 for Mrs A Shazell of St Columb; £150.00 for Messrs W & H Eustice of St Ervan, Wadebridge and £150.00 again for Mrs A Shazell.

Zwartbles to £166.00 again for Mrs Baxter. Charollais to £160.50 again for Messrs Eustice.

Poll Dorset to £150.00 for the best of a run from Mr M A Grigg of Sticker, St Austell, with others at £134.50; then a run from Mr A D Brewer of Little Petherick with full pens at £130, £120, £119.50 and £108.

Mules to £150.00 again for Messrs Lenthall. An older Wether from Mrs A Shazell looking well sold at £166. A short run of 2-tooth Suffolks from Mr P G Gilbert of St Buryan, Penzance to £144.00.

Store Lambs

A fair entry but noticeable easing in trade largely as a result of the prevailing dry weather, though prices still in touch with the finished section.

A top all of £127.50 for a forward pen from Mr C J Pearse of St Columb, followed by lambs from both Mr R D Dawe of Grampound and Messrs W & R Taffinder of Truro tied at £120.

Messrs M & S Baxter of Helston sold a stocky trio to £113.50, followed by Mr S Jones of Breage, Helston at £112. Longer term stores harder to place with many trading between £80 and £95.
