A councillor has called for more frequent and later buses in and out of Newquay following concerns people are finding it difficult to get about.
Cllr Sarah Thomson agues more bus services need to operate to cater for residents, commuters and holidaymakers on the periphery of the town.
She called on Cornwall Council to ensure the bus services are adequate for people at Newquay Town Council’s meeting last week.
Newquay Central and Pentire Cornwall councillor Louis Gardner, the cabinet member for the economy, stated residents need to contact their local council representative to feed back any concerns to bus companies.
Cllr Thomson said: “The last service coming out of Newquay is 5.15pm. That’s no use to anybody. There are tourists coming off the beach.
“The Atlantic Coastal route is an hourly route for tourists. But for people working in Newquay that need to commute in they cannot do it. ‘It’s ridiculous in terms of getting a workforce from the periphery in and getting tourists in and back out again and people back out from work.
“It’s a disgrace. Cornwall Council supporting these bus routes need to get some input into this because it’s not fit for the local periphery. Cornwall Council need to co-ordinate with the bus services to make a much better service for Newquay, its residents and tourists.”
Cllr Gardner said: “As a Cornwall councillor I have not received a single complaint about buses coming in and out of Newquay.
“There was one mention at a Pentire Residents’ Association where they changed the route and that’s now changed back again.
“I’m not aware it is an issue. People have got to contact their local councillor who can feed in any issues on things like last times of buses and routes.
“Before the bus timetables were changed there was extensive public consultation.
“Bus companies are going to say they won’t run services if people are not going to use them. If they get the demand they will run the service.
“It has to make business sense to them.
“When we ask them to run extra services the first thing they say is are you going to pay us to run that service as we are going to make a loss. It is expensive.”
Cllr John Fitter, the Cornwall councillor Colan and St Columb Minor, added: “I share Cllr Tomson’s concerns.
“I certainly was not advised they were going to abandon the Newquay to St Columb Major to Truro route. It just happened.
“I made submissions to the bus companies as did other Cornwall councillors asking we should have a reinstated limited service for the residents of St Columb Minor.
“It fell on deaf ears. I was told it wasn’t possible or practical.”
