A prominent Newquay councillor has reiterated calls for a controversial rap group to be dropped from the Boardmasters bill.

Newquay Porth and Tretherras Cornwall councillor has appealed to organisers Vision Nine to review and “if appropriate” revoke Bob Vylan’s appearance after frontman rapper Bobby Vylan led chants at Glastonbury of "free, free Palestine" and "death, death to the IDF [Israel Defense Forces), which were broadcast by the BBC.

The Reform UK councillor has written the open letter to Boardmasters after Andrea Hogan, campaign manager of the Reform UK Cornwall St Austell and Newquay branch and press officer of Reform UK Cornwall, posted on social media asking people in the area to "demand" action from the festival.

Cllr Towill said: “Dear Vision Nine Team.

“I am writing in my capacity as a local councillor representing Newquay Porth and Tretherras on Cornwall Council, to formally raise my objection to the scheduled appearance of Bob Vylan at the upcoming Boardmasters Festival.

“This objection follows serious concerns raised by residents and community leaders in response to the group’s recent performance at Glastonbury Festival, during which the lead singer led chants of “death, death to the IDF [Israel Defence Forces].” These remarks have been widely condemned, including by the Prime Minister, and are currently under police investigation for incitement and hate speech.

“Cornwall is a community that prides itself on inclusivity, respect, and unity. Hosting an act currently under criminal investigation for inflammatory and divisive rhetoric risks undermining the values we hold dear and could tarnish the reputation of Boardmasters as a family-friendly and community-spirited event. The BBC has already removed the performance from its platforms and issued a public apology, acknowledging the severity of the incident.

“I urge you to consider the potential impact on public order, community cohesion, and the reputation of our local festivals. I respectfully request that the necessary steps be taken to review and, if appropriate, revoke Bob Vylan’s appearance at Boardmasters 2025.”

Boardmasters has declined to comment at this time.
