An award-winning television presenter visited a charity to continue his documentary series about the stark reality of life away from Cornwall’s sand and surf.
Simon Reeve interviewed Monique Collins, the manager of DISC Newquay, to find out how the cost of living crisis is affecting people in the town for his Cornwall with Simon Reeve, which is screened on BBC Two.
Simon visited the DISC Newquay headquarters at the Sandy Lodge Hotel in Hilgrove Road during a Christmas function held for families who benefit from the charity.
Newquay choir Oll an Gwella performed carols and Harry Glasson’s Cornwall My Home, which was filmed for the programme.
Simon previously interviewed Don Gardner, the founding director of the Camborne, Pool and Redruth (CPR) Foodbank in the first Cornwall with Simon Reeve two-part documentary. The charity was flooded with offers of support after the episode aired.
Monique said: “We had the fantastic camera team and Simon filming the reality of living in Cornwall and the dire need we have here especially for our working families.
“We spoke about all the problems our locals are facing with the cost of living, housing and much more. It will be aired in the New Year and Simon will be returning for more filming soon.”
Tony Mills from Oll an Gwella said: “We mostly sang carols but were asked if we had any Cornish songs. We offered Harry Glasson’s Cornwall My Home and the crew liked it. We asked Simon to pose with us and I told him it might not enhance his reputation.”
Simon previously said of the series: “Perhaps Cornwall has struggled a bit in previous years with too much Pornwall on the telly – a term I heard while filming.
“We definitely wanted to do a bit of the Pornwall because it is an aspect of the county and we want people to watch in truth, but we generally found if you try and take a light and shade approach to a place you recognise the reality of it.
“We didn’t want to sock it to Cornwall. We weren’t just showing the problems – we tried to show a bit of both sides and, of course, we found some absolute bloody heroes.”
