At St John’s with Trinity Trewoon Methodist Church, choirs and musicians held a bring and buy sale and charity concert which raised more than £3,600 to support victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
In response to the news, the local disaster emergency response team leapt into action. In the last couple of years, various disasters had occurred around the world, and ad hoc concerts of local singers and performers have so far raised over £17,000 through these concerts.
For this fund-raising day, Lesley Dib had come up with the idea of a bring-and-buy sale.
A massive number of donations were received, enabling £600 to be raised during the day.
More than 30 volunteers sorted through and sold items, the residue being donated to Cornwall Hospice Care.
This concert featured Carclaze Voices, under the leadership of Matt Douglas, combined with Matt’s other community choir, NoteAbility. This created a powerful start to the concert, attended by more than 250 people.

The second act was husband and wife duo Jill and Jonathan Ryan. These life-long friends of Harry Glasson delivered four folk songs, including one that required the audience to get involved, which they did.
They kindly donated the proceeds of the sale of their CDs to the cause as well, raising a further £120.
The star act was song-writing icon, Harry Glasson. Despite many medical issues, causing Harry to think he would never be able to sing again, he has worked really hard over the years to find a new way of singing.
Local shanty group Press Gang was invited to join Harry on stage to perform one of his songs with him.
The audience loved Harry’s set, especially his jokes.
Press Gang then took to the stage. Their act, featuring three of Harry Glasson’s songs plus No-hopers, Jokers and Rogues had the audience clapping along enthusiastically.
They included a world premiere of one of Harry’s poems which had been set to music by guitarist Graham Hoskins.
Canoryon Lowen under the leadership of Nick Hart performed after the interval (during which coffees and biscuits were supplied by volunteers).
NoteAbility finished the night with their lively set. They were joined by Canoryon Lowen, Carclaze Voices and Press Gang to perform Matt Douglas’s arrangement of the classic Harry Glasson song, Cornwall My Home.
The day raised over £3,600, and may raise more. The concert was filmed by Chris Trevena of Sounds Like Cornwall and is available, with a link to the Disaster Emergency Committee, at linktr.ee/soundslikecornwall
