A Labour councillor has been accused of sharing inflammatory social media posts on gender issues and the Middle East conflict.

A complaint against Falmouth town councillor Jude Robinson, who represents the Trescobeas ward, is currently being investigated by Cornwall Council’s monitoring officer.

The website Cobblestone Media published screenshots from Cllr Robinson’s X/Twitter account – which she has since deleted – showing material she had shared from “known far right figures”, including Jayda Fransen, former deputy leader of Britain First, as well as from an account named Far Right Thug about Palestine.

She also shared posts on gender issues by author JK Rowling. The post she shared by Fransen was slamming another far right figure, Tommy Robinson.

Cobblestone Media said it had been made aware that a formal code of conduct complaint had been submitted to Cornwall Council by a Muslim constituent regarding Robinson’s social media activity.

The anonymous complainant told the website: “As a member of this community, I felt I had no choice but to make a formal complaint to the ombudsman about Cllr Robinson’s posts on social media. Her comments about Muslims and trans people were inflammatory and deeply hurtful as a queer person who grew up in a Muslim household.

“Public figures have a responsibility to represent all of their constituents fairly and with respect. Instead, these tweets have sown division and undermined trust in local government.

“I believe it’s vital that councillors are held to the standards of conduct we all expect and that nobody in our community feels singled out or unsafe because of who they are or what they believe. I hope the council decides to do the right thing and take appropriate action against this clear code of conduct breach.”

Cllr Robinson told the website: “I’m surprised anyone finds these inflammatory or feels the need to complain. I’m a left of centre feminist. Hardly surprising that I think women should dress how they want to and be wonderful rather than completely covered up, that we should all promote peace rather than hatred and Tommy Robinson is an unpleasant man who expects others to fund his life instead of getting a job like the rest of us.”

A Cornwall Council spokesperson has verified that “a complaint has been received and is currently being processed”.

Asked if she regretted sharing the content highlighted in the complaint and whether it was behind a decision to delete her X/Twitter account, Cllr Robinson said: “I have deleted my Twitter account because someone has gone through 22,000 posts between 2011 and 2024 and found a few that they feel offended by. I think that all of our time could be better spent.

“The anonymous online article did refer to me standing up to anti-semitism when Jeremy Corbyn was leader of the Labour Party and to my views on the Middle East conflict. Why people choose to make complaints is up to them and I am not going to second guess whether their motivation was personal or political.”
