A SMALL community on the Lizard Peninsula has come together to triumph over disaster.

In February 2014, the lifeguard hut and incorporated toilet block at Polurrian Cove was destroyed, which also served as Mullion Surf Life Saving Club’s clubhouse and kit store.

Since then, the hut has remained derelict and sustained further damage in more recent storms becoming a dangerous eyesore.

In 2023 Mullion Surf Life Saving Club, Friends of Polurrian Beach, the Polurrian Hotel and neighbouring landowners joined forces to set up a charity to purchase the hut from Cornwall Council and restore it for future generations.

Following generous donations, a crowdfunding campaign, local fundraising events and a grant from the Goonhilly Windfarm Community Fund, the Polurrian Cove Beach House Trust have handed over the keys of the building to Mullion Surf Life Saving Club.

Not only will the club be able to store its kit inside once more, the building will also provide unisex and accessible toilets for the public and outdoor showers for beachgoers to wash off sand.

The building has been restored with future storms in mind, having a reinforced concrete wall and slipway and storm shutters being fitted to the windows and doors over winter.

The RNLI will once again operate their lifeguard patrols from the front of the building too, which boasts an incredible view over the entire beach and cove.

Thanks to the charity Jay’s AIM, a defibrillator is permanently positioned and accessible to the public for the first time at Polurrian Cove.

On Thursday, July 3, the Polurrian Hotel hosted a BBQ on the beach for almost 200 members and families of Mullion Surf Life Saving Club and key stakeholders from the community to celebrate the completion of the building and to thank all those who have contributed and helped in the resurrection of the Beach House.
