A Newquay community came out in force to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.
Nansledan Community Association held a 1940s-themed street party at Parc Mengleudh where residents got together to enjoy a picnic. Many dressed in the 1940s style for the occasion.

Various live music from the 1940's were performed by singer Francesca Trebilcock and the newly formed The Velvet Hour.
Children’s outdoor games including a tug of war competition were also organised.

Paula Payne, the events organiser for the Nansledan Community Centre, said: “When the national programme of celebrations was announced that Street Parties would be happening so we thought what a great opportunity it would be to organise one in Nansledan as a way of getting the community together.

“With such a great space as Park Mengleudh available a 1940's themed event became the plan. In the lead up small groups of volunteers have been involved in sorting out and making bunting as well as creating "poppies" from plastic drinks bottles for a display.
“On the day people were asked to bring their own chairs etc and food and drink in line with the 40's theme and tasked with finding suitable costumes.

“Live 1940's style music from local singer Francesca Trebilcock and a newly formed group called The Velvet Hour really brought the event to life with their singing, costumes and general enthusiasm.
“One area was set aside for children's outdoor games and there was a tug of war competition where there was of course no cheating by parents of the children's teams.
“It was always meant to be an informal chance to meet up with friends and neighbours for a picnic in the park and for those who managed to deal with the wind chill bringing the temperatures way down it was a lovely afternoon.
“From my point of view the way everyone there helped with clearing up after the event was a good sign that our aim of community cohesion was achieved.”

The Royal British Legion is staging a wreath laying ceremony at its memorial near Nansledan School on Thursday, May 8 at 11am.
