A CORNISH charity has launched a crowdfunder to provide life-changing creative therapies for children in Cornwall who have experienced trauma, including Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

Out of the Woods Play and Creative Arts Therapy CIC, based in Redruth, aim to help children heal from trauma through accessible, creative therapies that build resilience and break cycles of harm.

Sadly, many children in Cornwall have faced ACEs such as abuse, neglect, loss, or witnessing domestic violence. The COVID-19 pandemic is also recognised as an ACE, meaning every child has already experienced at least one.

An Out of the Woods spokesperson said: “Without support, ACEs can affect children for life. They may struggle with education, employment, and relationships, and even face higher risks of serious illness as adults. But with the right help, children can heal, recover, and thrive.

“That’s where Out of the Woods comes in. We provide play therapy, music therapy, drama, and other creative therapies in safe, non-judgemental spaces. Here, children can express emotions, process trauma, and build resilience, because for them, play becomes the language of healing.

“Unlike many services, our sessions are not time-limited. We work at each child’s pace, continuing support for as long as they need. Last year, we delivered over 1,500 sessions to 61 children, but demand is growing rapidly.

“Each child typically needs around 20 sessions. With costs ranging from £412 to £1,512 per child, depending on subsidy, community support is urgently needed to reach more children.”

By supporting the campaign, donors are not only helping a child recover from trauma, they are giving children the chance at brighter, healthier futures.

To thank supporters, a range of special rewards will be available in time for Christmas, making each donation a meaningful gift of hope this festive season.
