CAMPAIGNERS are calling for council bosses to give the green light to traffic calming measures along a new stretch of road in Newquay.

Residents are calling on Cornwall Council to reduce the speed limit at Trevemper on the A392 due to the “excessive” speed vehicles are travelling especially when leaving the new roundabout as it makes it “risky” to turn into and out of the new site.

They would also like to see the installation of traffic lights at “essential” intersections to manage the traffic flow, enhance driver awareness, and provide a safer crossing for pedestrians.

A petition launched on Change.org has so far been signed by nearly 50 people.

Louise Knight started the petition after her beloved pet died after being run over by a “speeding” car. She wants to see the road made safer so that no further tragedy occurs.

The A392 re-opened in February after improvements were carried out to accommodate the new Trevemper and Treveth housing estates. A new signalised junction with pedestrian crossings was built on the A392 between the Trevemper and Treloggan roundabouts.

Ms Knight said: “In Trevemper, the need for safer roads is urgent.

“Cars speed up Trevemper hill, creating a dangerous environment for all who travel there. This hazard is not just theoretical. Already, we have witnessed cars travelling at high speed, leaving the new roundabout making it risky to turn into and out of the new Trevemper site. In addition, our beloved pet has tragically died after being run over due to a speeding car.

“Currently, the absence of traffic lights at critical junctions and the high-speed limit contribute significantly to the perilous road conditions. These factors combined increase the risk of accidents, making it unsafe for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.

“Speeding vehicles not only endanger drivers attempting to turn safely but also create a hostile environment for families, particularly those with small children and pets. This petition seeks to address these issues by urging the local authorities to take swift action.

“Firstly, reducing the speed limit on the new Trevemper Road will help control the speed epidemic, allowing more time for reaction and accommodating safer turns.

“Secondly, the installation of traffic lights at essential intersections will manage traffic flow, enhance driver awareness, and provide a safer crossing for pedestrians.

“The importance of these changes cannot be overstated. According to the UK's Department for Transport, speeding contributes to approximately one-third of all fatal road accidents. By implementing a lower speed limit and traffic lights, we can do our part in reducing this statistic considerably and protecting our community from further tragedy.

“Help us ensure the safety of all Trevemper residents and visitors. These measures will not only promote road safety but also foster a community where families can feel secure, children can play without fear, and residents can live without the constant threat of road accidents.

“Sign the petition to support a safer Trevemper. Let's come together to make our roads safer for everyone.”

Cornwall Council have been approached for comment.
