A CAMPAIGN has been launched to create a pedestrian crossing through Nansledan following concerns about safety since the route fully opened.

Residents are calling for a traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing to be installed along the A3059 due to traffic getting heavier and reportedly becoming more dangerous.

They claim there is nowhere safe to cross near the Nansledan roundabout or along the road between Sabzi and The Cornish Pantry.

Resident Jo Ingram said: “This is an important safety issue for a lot of people in our community, especially children and the most vulnerable.

“There are no safe pedestrian crossings and by safe, I don’t mean a tiny traffic island or a zebra crossing. We need traffic lights to stop cars properly.

“It might be fine for those who can sprint across when there’s a gap, but for children, nursery staff, school kids, and visually impaired people it’s getting dangerous. I’ve personally seen too many near misses recently.

“The key issues are it’s a 30mph road, which is just 20 metres from a nursery. School children are crossing unsafely to get to school.

“People are having to run across the roundabout on all four sides and there is no safe crossing for the visually impaired. Traffic is getting heavier, and the near misses are increasing.

“What we need are traffic lights on the A3059 like on Henver Road and traffic lights at the main Nansledan roundabout.

“We are calling on people to report the issue to Cornwall Council. The more people speak up, the more likely they are to act. We need to make this happen for our community.”

Resident Louise George added: “I live on the new side, and I’m disabled.

“We really need a crossing of some sort now.”

Another resident said: “The road is already very busy to cross. Drivers are really motoring through despite it being a residential estate. A pedestrian crossing is needed before an accident occurs.”

Tretherras Cornwall councillor Kevin Towill has set up a meeting with officers at Cornwall Council to discuss a way forward. He believes a pedestrian crossing is needed.

Cllr Towill said: “I have been up to meet concerned residents and discussed the matter with them.

“I agree that a crossing is needed on both of the sections of the road, the new strategic Highway A3059 road and William Hoskins stretch of road.

“I am making it clear to officers that these works must be delivered outside of the usual local road traffic projects because of the size and cost of the work needed.

“In fact, I think we will use up the entire local budget if we cover what needs to be done up there, so we needed help from the centre highway budget.

“As this is an important matter of public safety, will need those extra resources from highways in order to make this area safe. recently I installed a road traffic sign on William Hoskins Road. This was an important initiative because it will supply evidence that there is a problem of speeding and heavy traffic evidence.”
