THE CHANCELLOR has failed to tackle the cost-of-living crisis and grow the economy, according to the Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson for Truro and Falmouth.

Ruth Gripper, who is also a Cornwall councillor for Mylor, Perranarworthal and Ponsanooth, said: “Labour was elected on a promise of tackling the cost-of-living crisis and growing the economy - and this is the second Budget where it has failed to do either. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) yesterday downgraded its growth forecast for the coming years.

"This time last year the Chancellor told us she wouldn't be coming back for more, and that economic growth would be her focus. You can't tax your way to growth.

“At a time when what we need is confidence in the economy and optimism for the future, this Budget is hitting millions of people with stealth taxes, and doing too little on the cost of living. Small business is the engine of our economy but there was almost nothing in this Budget for our high streets, for small businesses, hospitality or the farming community.”

Cllr Gripper conceded that there were “some positives”, namely investment in Cornwall's industrial growth and in Truro health centre, and an end to the two-child benefit cap. “This is the most effective way to lift children out of poverty. It shouldn't have taken so long, but I'm glad the Chancellor has finally listened to calls from the Liberal Democrats - and many voices in her own party - and lifted the cap,” she said.

"'Not chaos' is a pretty low bar for a Budget, but given recent experience I guess it's something,” Cllr Gripper added. “But we need much more than that to get our economy back on track, and give people confidence about the direction we're going. Unfortunately, I'm not convinced this Budget will do the job."
