TWO dedicated team members from the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT), who are based on the Isles of Scilly, are preparing to take on the Cardiff Half Marathon this October in support of the South Western Ambulance Charity.
Paramedic, Jess Marsh and emergency care assistant, Liz Magee, will be lacing up their running shoes on October 5 for the 13.1-mile challenge, raising funds to support the islands’ volunteer Community First Responders (CFRs) who play an essential role in delivering urgent care on the Isles of Scilly.
The money raised from running the marathon will help provide lifesaving CPR training for local communities, support staff and volunteer wellbeing, and fund the placement and maintenance of defibrillators to improve community preparedness for cardiac emergencies.
Jess said: “We have chosen to support this charity for the vital role that our CFRs play across the South West, especially in remote areas such as the Isles of Scilly, where we both live and work. These volunteers give up their time to support their community 24/7.
“Living on the Isles of Scilly has its training perks – the coastal views are stunning, but finding a route long enough for our training runs is definitely a unique challenge, but we are so looking forward to running the Cardiff Half Marathon.”
Louise Walsh, South Western Ambulance charity manager said: “We are thrilled to have Jess and Liz representing the charity at the Cardiff Half Marathon. The work they do on the islands is incredible, and their fundraising will make a real difference for their community. We wish them the very best of luck.”
Unfortunately, fellow colleague Serena, who had hoped to join the run, has been sidelined due to injury. But she’ll still be by their side on race day.
