A LIFEBOAT crew saved a man and his dog in Newquay harbour in the early hours of Wednesday (July 15).

Thankfully a local fisherman had heard the casualty shouting for help and alerted the necessary authorities.

A crew from the D-class lifeboat were then able to help the man ashore at around 4am. He was later reunited with his dog.

A spokesperson for Newquay RNLI said: “A casualty and their dog had got into trouble in the water at Newquay harbour.

“The casualty could be heard shouting for help and a local fisherman, who had raised the alarm had sight of the casualty and his dog as they clung to his boat.

“Fast acting boat crew donned their personal protective equipment and the casualty was located with the tractor headlights and shore crew searchlights. He was in significant distress and not far from the shore, among several moored boats.

“As the D Class was entering the water, boat crew managed to assist the casualty to shore and into the safety of the lifeboat station.

“Newquay coastguard search and rescue team had arrived by this point and a trained paramedic monitored the casualty, who after being in the water for some time, was severely cold and shocked. The casualty was taken to hospital by South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust for further assessment. Thankfully the casualty and his dog were reunited later that morning and sent thanks for saving their life and taking care of his dog.”
