FOOTAGE has been released of emergency services at Mawgan Porth where a man died after he was recovered from the sea.

Newquay Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 924 and the St Athan Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 187 as well as RNLI lifeboats can be seen scouring the area on Tuesday night (July 21).

They were among emergency services that were scrambled to the scene at about 8.20pm following reports of concern for two people in the water, which also included Cornwall Air Ambulance, Newquay and Padstow RNLI lifeboats, Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team, HM Padstow Coastguard, the ambulance service and the police.

A man in his forties from Oxfordshire was recovered from the sea by members of the public and given emergency medical treatment by ambulance and coastguard teams but was confirmed deceased at the scene. Another man sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the scene.

The road at Mawgan Porth was closed off whilst emergency services dealt with the incident.

Eyewitness Stuart Mathieson said: “A very intensive search pattern was carried out into darkness by all the emergency services involved.

“We saw the Coastguard helicopter arrive in the middle of the bay in Mawgan Porth followed by the arrival, and swift departure, of the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

“Shortly after, the helicopter was joined by the RNLI Atlantic 85 and the D class lifeboats from Newquay which immediately started searching the bay and surrounding area. Padstow RNLI’s Tamar class lifeboat joined later, and a second Coastguard helicopter was spotted on the cliffs on the south side of the bay.”

A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police were called at around 8.20pm to Mawgan Porth beach on Tuesday, July 29, following reports of concern for two people in the water.

“One man sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the scene.

“A second man was recovered by members of the public and given emergency medical treatment by Ambulance and Coastguard teams. Sadly, the man in his forties, from Oxfordshire, was confirmed deceased at the scene.

“His next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Newquay and St Columb Inspector Steve Johnson added: “Police were called to Mawgan Porth beach last night to a report of people reported in difficulty in the water.

“A multi-agency approach meant the persons were brought to safety and provided medical treatment. Unfortunately, one of the males in his forties was pronounced deceased at scene.

“At this time there are no suspicious circumstances and it would appear to have been a tragic accident. Officers were on scene and have been supporting the family.”

Coastguard have issued advice following the incident and thanked local businesses who provided help.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard Padstow said: “Whilst packing down from our weekly training session at Diggory’s, the team was tasked to an incident involving persons in difficulty in the water at Mawgan Porth..

“Two casualties were retrieved from the water, both of whom required treatment. No further information is available at this time.

“A heartfelt thank you to Bettys Surf Shop, Kingsurf, off duty RNLI lifeguards, local businesses, members of the public and all emergency service assets who provided invaluable assistance.Please ensure that you always swim at a lifeguarded beach. Lifeguards are on beaches in our area daily, throughout the summer holidays, between 10am and 6pm.”

A spokesperson for Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team added: “The team were tasked to an incident on Mawgan Porth Beach after receiving reports concerning persons in difficulty in the water.

“Two casualties were retrieved from the water, both of whom required treatment. No further information is available at this time.

“The team would like to thank the off duty lifeguards, members of the public, local businesses and all assets and agencies who provided invaluable assistance with the incident.”
