TODAY we are visiting the coastal communities of Portreath and Porthtowan, known for their beaches and industrial heritage, as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County,.

Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Our journeying around Cornwall has so far seen us travelling along the superb south coast and then exploring the wonderful far west of the county, including the Tin Coast, St Ives and the Hayle area.

“For the latest part of the tour, we are following the extensive northern coast of Cornwall in a generally north-easterly direction. This coastline has some lovely scenery and is well worth a visit.”

The seaside resort of Portreath is just a few miles north of the large towns of Camborne and Redruth. The village has a long harbour wall which stretches out into the sea and its beaches are good for surfing.

Inland from Portreath is the Tehidy Country Park which is owned and managed by Cornwall Council and has woods, a lake and more than nine miles of paths to explore. The park was created on an estate formerly owned by the wealthy Basset mining family.

For cyclists, the Coast to Coast Trail runs for 11 miles from Portreath to Devoran on the banks of the Fal estuary network.

Meanwhile, walkers can also enjoy the remote coast paths around Portreath. The path to the north east will bring you, eventually, to the village of Porthtowan with its surfy beach and mining relics.

Next time, we will exploring the St Agnes area.

Our extensive tour around Cornwall, visiting well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from sandy beaches, remote moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to historic towns, pretty villages, mining heritage sites and visitor attractions.
